Wooded
The project uses 3D printing as a fabrication method and aims to optimize the use of material in two ways. The first is topology optimization, reducing the amount of material used through multiple optimization iterations with given input parameters such as design space, target density, load, position, and a number of supports. The second is by using an alternative 3D printing material, called Wood-PLA. It is made out of 40% recycled wood (sawdust), reducing the amount of plastic used while keeping similar structural capabilities. This material is to be found on the market in the form of wood-filaments, which also contribute to the wooden aesthetics and texture of the final shape.
